President Barack Obama has delayed a planned visit to Indonesia as a beautiful country several days to focus on healthcare reform, the White House has said.

The White House had been pressing the House of Representatives to hold a key vote on Obama’s flagship healthcare reforms before his original departure date on March 18, but it became clear that that deadline was unrealistic.

The president had promised to the work the phones from overseas, but top Democratic aides in Congress said the leadership felt it needed Obama’s personal touch in Washington to have any realistic chance of pushing his signature domestic initiative across the finish line.

President Barack Obama’s trip next week to his childhood home of Indonesia will be no vacation and is unlikely to be delayed by his health reform drive, the White House said Thursday.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Obama, who is expected to leave the United States next Thursday, would attend a democracy promotion conference and highlight counter-terrorism measures during the visit to Indonesia.

Obama will also seek to use his stay in the world’s most populous Muslim nation to build off a speech he gave last year to the Islamic world from Cairo urging for improved ties with the United States, Gibbs said.

The trip now figures to be an even faster sprint through Indonesia and Australia than previously scheduled, though the White House says it must go on as both nations are vital to Obama’s bid to revive US Asia-Pacific policy.

Obama has billed himself as America’s first “Pacific president”, and his journey had been timed to coincide with the school spring break to allow the president to take his family.

The fact he must leave his daughters at home may take the gloss off the trip for Obama and disappoint his hosts.

“The United States has been absent from the Asia-Pacific region. We can’t lead in this region of the world without strong bilateral relationships with Indonesia and Australia,” Gibbs said.

The delay will also likely fan fresh doubts about the capacity of Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives to put together a majority of votes for the embattled effort to overhaul America’s mostly private healthcare system.

Obama has spent over a year trying to cajole Congress into passing the kind of sweeping healthcare reform that has eluded Democratic presidents for decades.

In recent days, he has escalated the fight, staking his own political credibility and authority on passing the bid to expand access to health care for millions of Americans and to cut costs and rein in insurance giants.

In a delicate piece of political choreography, Obama wants the House of Representatives to pass a Senate health care bill, then for both chambers to endorse a package of “fixes” to harmonise the final legislation.

Obama, who lived in Jakarta with his late mother Ann Dunham in the 1960s, said last year in Singapore that he was looking forward to visiting his old haunts in Indonesia.

He was invited to make the trip by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and both sides have said they plan to use Obama’s childhood ties to the country to further tighten a crucial pan-Pacific relationship.

The Prambanan temple is extraordinarily beautiful building constructed in the tenth century during the reigns of two kings namely Rakai Pikatan and Rakai Balitung. The Prambanan temple build in the ninth century Hindu temple compound in located approximately 18 km east of Yogyakarta city on the boundary between Yogyakarta and Central Java province, dedicated to Trimurti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Sustainer (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva).

The Prambanan temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, currently is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, and is one of the largest Hindu temples in south-east Asia. It is characterised by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu temple architecture, and by the towering 47m high central building inside a large complex of individual temples and the area that now functions as beautiful park. There is a legend that Javanese people always tell about this temple. As the story tells, there was a man named Bandung Bondowoso who loved Roro Jonggrang. To refuse his love, Jonggrang asked Bondowoso to make her a temple with 1,000 statues only in one-night time. The request was nearly fulfilled when Jonggrang asked the villagers to pound rice and to set a fire in order to look like morning had broken. Feeling to be cheated, Bondowoso who only completed 999 statues cursed Jonggrang to be the thousandth statue.

In 1811, Collin Mackenzie, a surveyor in the service of Thomas Stamford Raffles during Britain’s short lived rule over the Dutch East Indies, came upon these temples by chance. Although Raffles subsequently commissioned a full survey of the ruins, they remained neglected for decades. Dutch residents carried off sculptures for garden ornaments while local villagers used foundation stones for construction material. Proper restoration began only in 1930 and continues today.

Borobudur Temple

Borobudur, a name deriving from an expression meaning ‘Mountain of accumulation of merits of the ten states of Bodhisattva’ is commonly thought of as a Buddhist structure, yet its initial construction was planned and conducted by Hindu builders sometime around 775AD. The enormous first and second terraces were completed by a declining Hindu dynasty, construction was then halted for some years, and later, from 790 to 835 AD, the Buddhist Sailendra dynasty continued and finally completed the great stupa.

Located at 42 kms west of Yogyakarta, on the island of Java in Indonesia, The plan of Borobudur Stupa is a schematized representation of the cosmos, a mandala. After visiting its lower terraces decorated with bas-reliefs, pilgrims attain the shrine’s crowning stupa, which symbolizes the Absolute.

The walls and balustrades are decorated with fine low reliefs, covering a total surface area of 2,500 m2. Around the circular platforms are 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha. The monument was restored with UNESCO’s help in the 1970s.

As well as being the single most popular tourist attraction in modern day Indonesia, Borobudur has resumed its role as an important place of worship and pilgrimage for Indonesian Buddhists. Visitors should be understanding and respectful of this especially during major Buddhist holiday periods.
